"Charlee's Law" - We Love You Charlee

Charlee - See I bet you are already in LOVE with this cutie pie <3
To Start off this post I would like to wish Charlee a Very Happy 8th Birthday (last week). This little Angel captured my heart and I thank her everyday that she did. I feel that I was suppose to meet Charlee and her amazing family. They were meant to be in our lives. I also believe that Emma knows Charlee and they spent time together in heaven, there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of Charlee and her family. Charlee sadly passed away in March of 2014, but she left us with so much joy and hope. If you would like to learn more about Charlee and Battens Disease you can read more on her blog and/or facebook page. I promise you will fall in love with her just like we did.
Here is her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/charleesangelsbenefit/info?tab=page_info and here is her website: http://charleesangelsbenefit.blogspot.com/

Everyday that passes we never know if Emma will have a seizure (or how many she will have) and sadly this was the same for Charlee. We have tried loads of medications and none of them have seemed to work. They would make Emma so tired and she would sleep all day, seizures kept happening and she stopped eating. We were so scared about what to do next we had tried so many medications and she was still having seizures and she wasn't "there". She was just present with little function because she was so tired and the seizures were wiping her out! Finally it hit me CHARLEE!!! Charlee and her family fought to get Cannabis oil legalized here in Utah for people with Intractable Epilepsy. However, it's not as easy as it sounds. There is a process you have to go through in order to be considered for a Hemp Card here in Utah. Our first step to qualify was Emma had to have 3 different failed seizure meds, sadly and thankfully Emma had this requirement before she was 7 months old. Second we had to get paper work filled out and approved by her neurologist to have the proof that Emma has intractable epilepsy and 3 fail seizure meds. After this we had to take the paper work filled out by the Dr and ourselves and deliver it to the State Department of Health. We had to pay $200 for our Hemp Card. This card is only good for one year and then we have to renew it for $50 every year after that (unless you miss the deadline then its full price again). The downside is all of this is an out of pocket expense including the purchasing the CBD oil, we also have to guide ourselves through the use of the oil because legally our Dr can not help us with dosing thank goodness for the Realm of Caring and CW Hemp. Yes, it is costly but so so worth it. We worked hard along side Emma's neurologist and she is fully approved to use CBD oil YAY!!!

In previous posts I have been very vague about Emma's meds just stating that we were trying a new one this was because I didn't want to jinx anything before we got our own results from the oil. I am proud to say that Emma is on CBD Oil and it is doing wonders for her. Her seizures are under control and her progress overall has improved so much. We have got to see her smile, hear her laugh, and most importantly we have been able to see who Emma is and we love her personality so much! I hated to see her so drugged up on meds. Everyday that I give Emma the CBD Oil I think about and thank Charlee and her family for fighting so that so many families get to see and feel the benefits of CBD oil.

January 2016

I can't believe that it is already the last day of January! To start off the month Emma had her 9 month (we are a little behind because of the steriod at 6 months she couldn't get her vaccinations while taking it) Dr appt. and she hadn't gained a lot of weight since her last appt. so we had to start supplementing with formula. My milk had lost it's fat content so basically my milk was now just for taste. As hard as breastfeeding is especially as a working mom, you would think that I would be super excited to stop breastfeeding, but I was actually sad cause she loved to eat and what if she didn't like formula. For a while I felt like a failure and kept giving her breastmilk every other bottle and formula the other. Then Brandon said why? She eats the formula just fine and she needs it, he was right I was exhausting myself trying to pump enough for her to eat. So I am officially done breastfeeding and yes now I am relieved. So in conclusion we have another Dr appt. next week to assess her weight gain which I think is huge! Her 12 month clothes we got for Christmas are starting to get tight! Here she is at 10 months (January 20, 2016)
Happy 10 Months Princess
Brandon had an open house this month and so he brought home the balloons for Ava, but they turned into Emma's. She loves watching them and she even held on to the string tugging at the balloons then she tried to eat the string. Yes, I know how irresponsible of me to let my 10 month old eat the string of a balloon, but nope we celebrated because Emma has never taken a toy to her mouth before. So nice job Emma we are so proud of you! See pics below

In order to get our Christmas Tree down without tears we told Ava she could build a fort/hut but not until the tree was down because were else would we build it...big mistake I just barely got the fort/hut taken down today! But I will say these 2 enjoyed their time together inside the fort/hut.

We came across a great item mention by our PT to help Emma to practice sitting up a little bit more independently (we worry about her getting her head too flat by always laying on it or sitting her her support chair). It is called a Hugaboo we ordered it off Amazon (different prices for different colors/designs). So far it's been a great purchase. She should be a Hugaboo model don't you think ;)

Emma also had an eye appt. and we got some pretty good news! Her astigmatism has decreased by half! The Dr. says that most kids are born with an astigmatism and most kids lose it on their own, but where Emma most likely stopped developing between 3-5 months she wouldn't lose it on her own. So the glasses have done their job so far and we will recheck in 4 months to see if the rest has started to go away on its own or if we will need to come back to the glasses. But for the next 4 months no glasses for this little lady. So again I become the only one in our little family with glasses.

I have to give a shout out to Ava, Emma's big sister. Ava's dance class had a parent observation day and she did so awesome! She had only been in dance class 4 times. I am impressed with her talent! Nice work Best Big Sis!

On a sad note Emma has come down with a cold this weekend. We are doing lots of Tylenol and Ibuprofen to help keep the fever down so we don't see those horrible seizures. Plus lots of suctioning of her little nose. It has wiped her out! Hopefully she's back to normal tomorrow, I have seen a couple smiles today!

On a mommy note I wanted to share something that I have come across this month and have fallen in love with. It's a podcast called Bringing Up Betty. We all have moments in our lives when we feel lost and think that no one could possibly understand how you are feeling....well I have felt that way many times as I am sure we all have, but I finally found a podcast that has confirmed all my feelings and emotions about being a special needs mom. It hits so close to home and I feel "normal" for once about my feelings. This is a wonderful podcast even if you aren't the parent of a special needs child but simply love or care about one, which I am sure we all do. I had never listened to a podcast before but I am so glad I started if you are interested you should check it out. -Bringing Up Betty- is the name of the podcast and there is also a Facebook page and website.

Happy Birthday to Emma's Daddy! We are so blessed to have Brandon in our lives. He is the best daddy and husband. He is a very hard worker and helps with the girls more than I could ever ask for. On a side note...one day he will realize who he should really cheer for.... GO BRONCOS!

I left the cutest little video for last! I was eating a Creamie one day and let her have a couple licks and she loved it. Then 3 days later Brandon was eating one and Emma started to make noises, almost screaming at him, we couldn't figure out what was wrong. Then it came to me....she wanted the Creamie and we were right! Here is the video that followed all that "screaming" LOL! Someone loves her Creamies - Lesson here: Don't stand between this girl and her Creamies!

*Check back next week I believe I will have some exciting news to post*
NO I AM NOT PREGNANT LOL
Until then.... <3 EMBRACE LIFE <3

Goodbye 2015, Hello 2016

As much joy as 2015 brought us, it also brought a lot of pain. The joy of welcoming our beautiful little girl Emma was a highlight of our year, she has brought so much happiness into our lives. But sadly this moment brought a lot of fear and pain as well. Learning that our perfect little girl was going to have struggles her whole life, not to mention a shortned one, was the most heart stopping, painful thing we have ever gone through. Being a teacher and helping parents understand that their child might be a little delayed has been a part of my life for the last 10 years but nothing prepared me for the moment when someone would say those words to me...."Your child will be severely developmentally delayed". My heart dropped, things went blurry and I can't remember much after that except that I loved this little girl and I was going to do everything in my power to help her live the life that she deserves. The response from friends and family was greater than we could have ever imagined and we can't thank you all enough for that! Lissencephaly (smooth brain) was a word that I had never heard of until March 25, 2015, 5 days after Emma was born, 1 day after she started having seizures. This word will be a part of our lives but it will not define our lives. We are starting to find our "New Normal" and that is mostly because of Ava, Emma's big sister. She plays with Emma and lights up her/our life. I don't know how things would be without her. Emma will only laugh at Ava, and by laugh I mean really laugh, we occasionally will get a giggle but Ava gets the full on laugh and I wouldn't change it for the world. The bond that these two have made over the last 9 months is incredible. This is where the joy part comes in....seeing them together makes me realize things are exactly the way they are suppose to be and we are going to grow together as a family and 2016 is going to be amazing!

Here are some of our highlights of 2015 with may firsts for our family and Emma :)

November/December 2015

The Holidays were a wonderful time for our family for the most part. Thanksgiving was amazing and so fun to share with our wonderful families. Christmas was full of parties, family and so much fun! Here was the sad part Brandon got strep, Ava got pink eye, then croup, and then pink eye returned! Emma got croup too and that was very scary, causing her to have 2 seizures after 51 days being seizure free. Thankfully we were able to monitor her Oxygen level and heartrate with our Owlet (if you don't know what this is and are having a baby it's a must click here!) and with some steroids she was much better but it still lasted from the 20th -27th. We finally got a smile again on the 27th, 7 days without a smile from Emma was rough. So glad to have her happy self back. Yes, I was in a war zone but thanks to OnGuard (essential oil) I survived, LOL. Like I stated above Emma is back on track doing well and seizures are still under control, we have found that fevers are what really spikes her seizure activity. So our goal is no fevers aka keep this little girl as healthy as possible.  on a side note if you know you are going to be around us and you are sick or have been sick please, please, please think of Emma and if you think you still are not 100% then stear clear....please her life depends on it.

Christmas Eve started off as magical as always with having kids especially a 4 year old. We visited with family exchanged gifts and then headed home to decorate cookies and watch the Christmas Story. As we were decorating cookies Brandon started to tell me how earlier he recieved a voicemail from someone who said we didn't know him and he didn't know us but they had a gift to us from his family to ours. My heart dropped people are so nice...don't get me wrong we were skeptical at first kinda weird right. But he said he would be over soon. When they got to our house they explained how they heard about Emma from the Festival of Trees (previous post) and it stuck out to them because they too had a daughter with Lissencephaly and her name is Abby! We were so happy to finally meet another Liss family. We loved meeting Abby and her family she was amazing she gave us so much hope for Emma. They delivered some gifts for the girls and us we were overwhelmed and can't thank them enough. I also have to thank Abby's sister for writing Ava a letter explaining how important and special her job is being Emma's big sister, I still cry just thinking about it. It is the best letter and Ava wanted to hang it in her room, and that's exactly where it is at this exact moment. We would like to thank Abby and her family for reaching out to us it made our Christmas extra special.

Here are some pics from the last few months to get everyone caught up on this cuteness I live with everyday.

Emma Laughed!!! Hearing your children laugh together is the best sound in the world.
It is a sound that I wondered if I would ever hear and in these moments I know that we are so blessed to have eachother.
Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Festival of Trees 2015 ~ Embrace Life

For the last 3 years our family has decided instead of exchanging gifts for Christmas we would donate money and put it towards decorating a tree for the Festival of Trees. The Festival of Trees is a fundraising event for our local Childrens Hospital. People deocrate trees, wreaths, mini trees, gingerbread houses, and quilts. These items are then sold silent auction. Never did I ever think that one day we would do a tree for my own daughter. Well this year it happened our tree was dedicated to our very own Emma! It was called Embrace Life, it was a nursery rhyme theme with tons of other items for little girls. It turned out better than I could have ever imagined. Thanks to all those who donated time and money to make this tree possible. Also thanks to Primary Childrens Hospital for all that you do everyday for children. I asked friends and family who went to the festival to post a pic with the tree and here is a video that I put together of everyone who tagged us in their picture that they seen Emma's tree.

Mommy Post - Embrace what is and not what isn't -

I have debated for so long whether or not to post something like this but recent events have stirred up a bunch of emotions and I really want to get some things off my chest. I've just kept so much inside and I have read other blogs and some have been mommy posts and I realized it's ok to feel this way sometimes and to wanted to share so maybe someone else can read it and be validated that's it's ok to have these feelings sometimes. Phew here goes....

Brandon and I often think about the day our lives changed on March 20, 2015 we brought another beautiful little girl into this world and we were now parents of 2 amazing little girls. We were so excited to start this new chapter of our lives. Then 4 days later our lives forever changed again, our sweet baby started having seizures. Then on March 25, 2015 our lives not only changed again but was flipped upside down and spun in a blender, when we recieved Emma's diagnosis of Lissencephaly. I remember being in shock and not really understanding what our life was going to be like, how were we going to handle this as parents, how was Ava going to handle it, how was Emma going to progress, will she eat, will she sit up, will she crawl, will she walk, will she talk, what will her life expectancy be?.....and still to this day all we can say is WE DON'T KNOW!!! The unknown races through my mind EVERY SINGLE day! This morning as I dropped the girls off at my parents house Ava said to me, "mom I hope Emma doesn't need a wheelchair." It was so unexpected I was caught off guard and said "ya we hope she can walk one day huh, but she will probably need a wheelchair to help her most of the time but it's ok, right?" she replied "Ya it's ok I will just learn to push her around is that Ok?"  holding back my tears I said, "yes sweetheart that would be awesome and I would love to teach you how to do that". She seemed satisfied with my answer and ran inside to see Grandma and Grandpa. As I emptied the car it was all I could do from breaking down. Ava must think about things a lot more than I thought and I hope that she is dealing with things ok.

The unknown is hard and sometimes I have a hard time focusing on all the amazing things that Emma is doing instead of what she isn't doing. She is eating on her own and not only breastmilk but she loves peas, avacado, sweet potatoes, and bananas. This is huge that she is thriving!!! We are getting better head control everyday and I am so proud at how hard she works everyday and during therapy time she lets us push her. I am so grateful for the emotion that she shows everyday. Eating and emotion was something that they said might be hard for her to ever achieve. Heck she even locks her lips up when she doesn't want to eat anymore that is huge in my opinion. But sometimes as I mentioned above it hits me that she is NOT sitting up, not rolling, not playing with toys, and she still doesn't have a lot of awareness of her hands, and no crawling. As a parent it hurts and I am sure her delay will hit me a lot of times, but I need to remember to celebrate all that she IS doing instead of what she is not (sorry this paragraph was for me to remember all that she is doing and how amazing it is).

One story that comes to mind is last Saturday morning Ava came in our room and asked to take Emma with her to watch cartoons. We said sure and she pushed her rocker into her room and they watched cartoons. As time passed I heard Ava talking to Emma and she was telling her about all the characters on Doc McStuffins and telling her all about the show. As I listened my heart hurt because all I wanted was to one day hear Emma talking back to her big sister asking questions, and the reality is that most likely will not happen. My heart was crushed not even for me but for Ava and Emma. Sometimes the reality is hard but it is something that we need to Embrace and enjoy all these moments for what they are and not what they aren't. These two girls will have an incredible bond with their own form of communication that no one else will understand and I already see it everyday. Ava is Emma's biggest Cheerleader!

When first became parents we thought everyday of the things that Ava would one day do, when she would walk, talk, start shool, drive, graduation, college, marriage, children, etc. With Emma we have learned to slow down and take things day to day beacuse everyday that we wake up and have both of our girls is a true blessing and miracle. Life is a miracle, Embrace every moment and stop thinking too far ahead, Enjoy the little things that life brings.

The pain is real it hits us everyday we hurt for our girls. We hate seizures with every ounce in our bodies, we hate all the pain that it brings to our lives and to our little baby girl. We hurt everytime Emma cries during therapy but we keep pushing her because we want whats best for her. We will always be her voice and her biggest advocates, but through it all we will hurt. But the hurt will always be on the back burner because the love and joy that we get when this little girl smiles melts our hearts and we are so grateful for her and so blessed to have her in our lives. She will never be "better" she will never "out-grow" this, this is our lives and we have learned to Embrace that and cherish every moment. We pray that one day we can create enough awareness that maybe they might find a cure and we can help by sharing our story of our sweet Emma!

EMMA:
Emma's eye appointment went pretty good. The outcome is that she CAN see but her eye muscles are a little weak just due to her developmental delays. We are going to use the glasses to help build her eye muscles and try to help her with her eye crossing (you might see some pictures or videos with her eyes crossed and it is just her trying to focus.) We luckily had the frames already from her big sister having to wear them from 7-11 months of age. So we are just getting new lenses in them. We should be getting them anyday now.

On another note we have had a blast this October with the pumpkin patch, trunk or treat, and Cornbellys. Here are some pics of our fun family times this month.

Thanks for all of your love and support we can't thank everyone enough. Remember we still have wristbands for sale if you'd like one message me or email us and we can get it to you! email: jbatapia@yahoo.com. Latest Shenanigans

Sorry for the lack of posting again things have been so crazy between the neurologist, pediatrician, Pysical Therapy, and gymnastics. Here is a little post to update you on the latest :)

* Emma is currently weening off of some of her meds and she is doing great so far. We are also loving it because she is so happy and is working so hard during physical therapy. We are seeing such great results due to her not being so medicated.

* We added an occupational therapist to go along with our physical therapist and they are both fantastic. Emma got some splints to help with her hands to be open more and for her thumb to stay OUT!

* She was finally able to get her immunizations this week plus the flu shot. Not that we enjoyed the after math (the fever from the shots cause her to have seizures, not the shots themselves) but we definitly think they are worth it! Here stats from the dr appt are below, she is growing great and best of all her head seems to be growing too (less chance of microcephaly: small head)

  • 15 lbs 10 oz
  • 25 inches

* Emma was blessed this last Sunday it was such a beautiful day and we are so blessed to have so many friends and family to share the day with us.

* Another plus in our week is that Ava passed everything off in gymnastics to move up to the big kids :)

* Emma is cleared to finally eat more food not that my breastmilk isn't the bomb but this is HUGE! We are so happy that she is doing such a great job at eating. So far she had tried the following foods; Bananas, Avacados, Oatmeal, Rice Cereal, and Sweet Potatoes. She seems to love them all.

* This next week we have a blood draw on Monday to test her medicine levels to see if she is clear to start a new medication and physical therapy. On Tuesday she has an eye appt. to check the development of her eyes (fingers crossed for a good report). I will update on both of these hopefully next week sometime.

-Here are some fun pictures from the last few weeks. Enjoy them!

Keep checking back to see the latest happenings with Emma and our family. She is doing great with head control and working on putting weight in her hands to start to play with toys more (still is unaware of her hands).
